Maker’s Note
I said I loved muted autumn colours, and here they are! After all the glorious orange and exuberance of the Alani bag, this one takes us to a rather quieter corner of autumn.
I found this design while looking for autumnal leaf appliqués. I’d searched for deep green, warm brown, cream and gold but had omitted the word ‘leaf’, so this little butterfly-fella popped up in the results instead. A rather nice little meet-cute!
I’m not very keen on what I call the ‘plonk’ method of appliqué placement. And by ‘plonk’, I mean giving too little thought to the arrangement. A design may call for central positioning, but at other times a little misalignment works beautifully – particularly, I find, when there’s just a touch of overlap wrapping around the edge. You introduce the appliqué to the bag and keep moving it around until it calls to you.
It’s only when you look more closely that you begin to notice all the smaller details – the different patterns within the wings, the changes in direction of the embroidery and the little pearlescent beads adding just a touch of lustre here and there.
I’ve called this bag Sylvan, a name with associations to woods and forests, which seemed rather fitting for this softer, woodland-inspired autumn palette.
